This Week in PlayStation – April 2nd

A common stereotype about gamers is that they have short attention spans. As announcements for new games and hardware come and go, it’s easy to lose sight of the momentous events that shaped the gaming world. This Week in PlayStation highlights Sony’s rich videogame heritage, which dates back to the 1980’s. Step back in time with us as we put the spotlight on events big and small that have significantly altered the gaming culture.

This Week in PlayStation March 27th – April 2nd

March 27th

  • 2008 – Aussies down under get to enjoy Viking: Battle for Asgard, as it finally releases for the PS3.
  • 2008 – Eric Brown is announced as EA’s newest Chief Financial Officer. Brown is joining the video game studio, only after leaving a long stint with McAfee.

March 28th 

  • 2006 – North American PlayStation 2 owners finally got to experience the latest game in the long-standing Tom Clancy game series, Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter.
  • 2006 EA Sports announce that Bill Cowher will grace the cover of their first football manager simulation, NFL Head Coach.
  • 2006 – Square Enix’s Kingdom Hearts II hits North American PS2’s. Gamers finally get their hands on the adventure Japanese fan’s have been experiencing for four months.
  • 2008 – Electronic Arts announces that it has come to an agreement with New Line Cinema, that would extend the studio’s exclusive Lord of the Rings license.
  • 2008 – European viking fans get their hands on Viking: Battle for Asgard, with the region’s official PS3 release.
  • 2008 – In what would make national media, Electronic Art’s renews their Take-Two buyout offer, and gives an extended deadline for the Board of Directors of Take-Two to come to an agreement.

March 29th

  • 2006 – Take-Two announces that  Grover C. Brown now has a seat in the company’s Board of Directors.
  • 2009 – North American gamers get to finally rock out with their favorite band of all time, Metallica! Guitar Hero: Metallica rocks out to a North American PS3 release.

March 30th

  • 2006 – From Software’s latest PS2 title, Another Century’s Episode 2, hits the land of the rising sun, Japan.
  • 2006 – Capcom treats Japanese PS2 audiences with the release of Black Cat:Kikai Shikake no Tenshi.

March 31st

  • 2006 – Based on the film of the same name, the PS2 title Æon Flux, hits European retailers.
  • 2006 – Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter hits European PS2.

April 1st

  • 1998 – Asylum Studio’s teamed up with Eidos Interactive to bring Deathtrap Dungeon to PlayStation’s all across Britain.
  • 1999 – Gremlin Interactive’s Actua Ice Hockey 2 skates onto British PlayStation’s.
  • 1999 – Bloodlines, Radical Entertainment’s latest PS1 title, hits British stores.
  • 2003 – Square Co. and Enix Corporation officially merge, forming the Japanese behemoth, Square Enix.

April 2nd

  • 2007Harmonix, MTV and Electronic Art’s announce the first true competitor to the long reigning music champ, Guitar Hero. Rock Band is set to release later in the year and will feature a drumkit and microphone, two things that, at the time, Guitar Hero did not have.
  • 2009 – Guerilla Games release the tech-demo/video, “Killzone 2 Behind the Bullet”, onto the PlayStation Store. This revolutionary tech demo showcases the immense detail GG put into the game, and allows for unique, environment changing alterations to take place, all in real time.
