Shortly before Doom 3 was released back in August 2004, id Software announced it was working on a new IP. It turned out to be Rage, a first-person shooter and driving game which utilize id’s new id Tech 5 engine. However, another game which id Software holds high hopes for is the ‘awesome’ Doom 4.
Speaking during a recent Bethesda press event, id Software’s creative director Tim Willits stated that even though Rage will be the best game the company has ever made, however, Doom 4 should surpass it.
Hopefully, it’ll be even more awesome than Rage. For us as a company, every game needs to be better than the last. I truly believe that Rage is the best game we’ve ever made. When we made Doom 3 I said, Doom 3 is the best game we’ve ever made and Rage will be better. Hopefully. Doom 4 needs to be even more awesome than Rage.
Traditionally, id Software has mainly focused on the PC, occasionally delivering console ports. However, since Doom 3’s release, the studio has shifted its focus to next-generation consoles, and long may that continue. Doom 4 is scheduled for a 2010 release, while Rage is slated for a 2011 launch.
