Minis were first revealed at E3 2009 during the Sony Press Conference. Bite-sized games for a couple of bucks on the PlayStation Portable, it essentially gave PSP owners a cheap download-only option for entertainment. But how has the program fared since its inception? Sony has recently spoken up on the issue.
SCEA’s Senior VP of Publisher Relations Rob Dyer stated that the Minis program is simply going “okay.” That doesn’t sound too reassuring, but then he elaborates:
“My concern with Minis always has been if you have a PSP or a PS3, do you want to play small bite-sized games like that? I think the jury’s still out. I think in some instances they do, and some instances they don’t.”
But fans of this category of cheap downloads needn’t worry! Dyer has assured us that the program should continue:
“There have been a couple that have been really cool, but for the most part, a lot of it has been up-resed, recalibrated iPhone stuff…we’ve got to continue…It’s not like you have to spend a lot more money in order to get something that has a lot more impact for the platform.”
With the PS3 now able to play most Minis, this has no doubt helped to add to their appeal. How many Minis have you downloaded, and what could Sony do to help give these games the push they need in order to see better sales? Let us know in the comments below!
