Telltale Games Goes Back to The Future

Later this year, Telltale Games will attempt to hit “1.21 Gigawatts” when they reach 88mph on the speedometer.  If Doctor Emmett Brown’s calculations are correct, they they will have successfully time traveled and gone Back to the Future.  However, they won’t be using a Delorean to do it.  They will be using next-generation consoles like the PlayStation 3 instead.

The studio who brought you Sam and Max as well as Tales of Monkey Island will take you back in time with new Back to the Future games. California based Telltale Games recently signed a deal with Universal Studios and won the licenses to two of their biggest properties.  In addition to Back to the Future, they will be developing a new Jurassic Park game as well.

Bill Kispert, Universal Studios Interactive Vice President, explained the reason behind the partnership.

Telltale Games has succeeded in establishing a unique combination of digital and physical distribution models, and their reputation for quality production is well earned.  Telltale’s episodic story-telling is an ideal means by which to add compelling new content to these important franchises.

These two popular movie franchises will follow the same formula as the rest of Telltales content. Just like Sam and Max, the games will be released as individual seasons.  Telltale CEO Dan Connors explains.

Our partnership with Universal is an exciting next step in our continued growth as a mass-market games publisher and developer. We are all huge fans of both of these franchises. For Back to the Future and Jurassic Park we will leverage Telltale’s expertise in story-telling and game design to deliver on the unique elements of each series with our goal being to create compelling cinematic adventures paying homage to each franchise.

“Great Scott!”  There have been Back to the Future and Jurassic Park games in the past, but none of them were very good. Just check out the Angry Video Game Nerd’s take on the Back to the Future NES game. Any new game will have to be better than that! Look for the first season of Back to the Future to be released this winter with Jurassic Park to follow shortly after.
