LittleBigPlanet 2 E3 Impressions

In 2008, Media Molecule’s LittleBigPlanet revolutionized the gaming industry through the deep level of customization, personality and powerful level creation tools available to every player. While the success has lead to over 2 million user created levels, Media Molecule is planning a sequel that will completely redefine the way games give control to gamers once again. This will be done using a new and improved version of the Play Create Share formula that rocketed the first title to fame.

Many questioned how you could improve upon a game that had levels created for it by it’s users. Well considering that in the upcoming LittleBigPlanet 2 players can essentially create different genres within the title it adds an entire new element to it. These can range from a racer to even a shooter, it is up to the player what kind of level they would like to create. The basis of the LittleBigPlanet series is very simple, accomplish the level put forth in front of you, which may or may not be user created. One example of the wide-range of experiences found is a level where an opponent faces you and buttons must be pushed in the correct sequence as you garner higher and higher combos. If you happen to push the incorrect button it will cause the combo to end and result in you having to start over. This may be a very simple premise to a level, but it was extremely entertaining to see who could defeat who when playing.

Another level that was available for play was a bumper car level titled Crashy Bashy. Each player has a boost feature that sends their vehicles flying in the corresponding direction. By knocking off your opponent you gain a point, and the person with the highest score at the end wins. This level was absolutely a personal favorite of ours. Many times we found ourselves boosting only to have the opponent move and the character go flying off the edge.

For fans of the first LittleBigPlanet the second is a must buy, and for those on edge just go ahead and get it. The game is phenomenal. The elements that they added to the title literally expanded on the game in more ways than it’s possible to realize. We didn’t get a chance to look at the level creating features seeing as how they weren’t available, but given the vast amount of options given to the creator we can’t wait to get our hands on it. So be sure to check out LittleBigPlanet 2 when it comes out this November.
