EA is one of the best known international developers, marketers, publisher and distributors of video games. Their latest shooters, Battlefield: Bad Company and Medal of Honor are poised to take aim at Activision’s Call of Duty franchise. Though EA admits that their efforts won’t headshot Call of Duty anytime soon, they are pledging that the battle will be won over the course of a hard-fought, long-term war.
EA COO John Schappert explained to investors that he doesn’t expect to outsell some of the highly acclaimed upcoming FPS games this year, instead will hope for a leadership position in due time. When questioned in a recent earnings call transcript on their competitive outlook for MOH, Schappert eagerly replied;
“Between Battlefield and Medal of Honor, we’re going to see a substantial increase in our share against the FPS sector in calendar year ’10 versus ’09, ’08, ’07, ’06, pick the year. I think we got a shot at getting back into a leadership position over the next couple of years. And just watch this space for news we bring you on future titles, sort of in calendar ’11 and beyond. But make no mistake, we think we’ve got the people and the brands to take the leadership back in the FPS space. And we’re intending to make a good positive share gain this year. I think that’s almost a foregone conclusion that we’ll get the share gain. I don’t expect to topple either Halo or CoD this year.“
Medal Of Honor, during the original PlayStation and PlayStation 2 days (oh and were those grand days), was one of the leading arcade style shooters. With a total of four different MOH game taking stand on the PlayStation 2 alone, it proved to be one of the most successful and loved franchises.
As you may already know this will be the first MOH series to leave the infamous WWII era, and take on a more modern setting. Based in the dusty deserts of Afghanistan, the story this time around will focus on a fictional character know as Tier 1 Operator (the epic beard guy), who will tackle missions requiring his elite knowledge and skills on modern warfare.
Medal Of Honor will blast its way onto the PS3 this upcoming 15 October.
