A representative from Treyarch, the studio who is currently developing the next iteration of the Call of Duty franchise, Black Ops, recently revealed the studio is not afraid and is not shying away from the brutality of war. This comes just a year after Infinity Ward’s very controversial decision to include a level in Modern Warfare 2 that allowed gamers to show countless scores of unarmed citizens in an airport.
Speaking to Gamerzines at this year’s gamescom, Treyarch’s community manager Josh Olin had this to say about the game’s level of violence, and what gamers can expect to find in it:
“It’s tough to say. It is a mature themed game for mature audiences and we’re not shying away from the brutality or grittiness of war.
“Capturing that level of authenticity and realism is important in trying to immerse the players.”
Adding:
“Anything we do will be to propel the story or illicit an emotional response from the player, to make them feel angry or righteous or sad.
“Those are all elements that help immerse the player that much more deeply into the world. Nothing that we’ll do will be gratuitous.”
Certainly Olin has a good point. Over the top violence can ruin the game’s atmosphere. But, if done correctly, violence can actually add to the game’s environment and mood. Call of Duty: Black Ops will hit retailers November 10th.
