There are only a few games that have withstood the test of time; proving that their initial attractiveness and popularity was more than just a fleeting ‘wow’-factor – Space Invaders is one of those games. It is without a doubt one of the most well-known video games from the dawn of gaming, and has inspired a myriad of ports, copycats, and knock-offs. The 30th anniversary of Space Invaders brought the news that a new, updated and intelligent Space Invaders game would soon touch down on the PlayStation Network.
The newest version of Space Invaders, Space Invaders: Infinity Gene, has already seen a large following on the iPhone for about a year now. Instead of following the common trend of video game evolution and forcing 3D on a 2D game, SI: Infinity Gene boasts an impressive vector style. It feels distinctly original, yet gives you all the nostalgia from long days poppin’ quarters at the arcade. To keep with the theme of evolution, a Charles Darwin-esque spin has been implemented into the gameplay, allowing you to adapt and copy your enemies and use their abilities to survive the unrelenting hoards of invaders.
So far, the only details say that we can expect it in September 2010, so stay tuned to PSLS for more news soon.
