Released back in 1979, Atari’s Star Raiders, a title which essentially gave birth to the space combat simulation genre, is going to be updated for new audiences on consoles including the PlayStation 3.
Incinerator Studios will be making a new space combat game based on the classic. The updated version of the title puts an emphasis on spaceship dogfights, a navigation of a galactic map as well as players being able to try out ship transformation features. Additionally, Star Raiders will also include various multiplayer modes.
Incinerator president Joel Goodman told GameSpot during in an interview that:
“Great games such as X-Wing and Wing Commander were influenced by this Atari classic.”
Star Raiders is due to be released early 2011 on the PlayStation 3.
