Best Music Game of 2010

Winner: DJ Hero 2

The music games industry has seen a drastic reduction in sales, with Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock selling far fewer copies at launch than its previous iteration, and Rock Band 3, while critically applauded, also did not sell as hot its previous entries either. This was a direct result of stagnation for the genre. Sure, Rock Band 3 introduced playing with real instruments, but people had generally become tired of all the special editions of these games that really could just be released as DLC.

So it was refreshing when DJ Hero entered the marketplace, with the premise being that you are a disc jockey using a turntable as your instrument. The game was slow to sell, but eventually did go on to sell over 1.2 million copies by June of this year. Its sequel released in October, and it revamped and improved the gameplay in subtle but much-appreciated ways. The soundtrack in this game is so good that it could be set to auto-play and you could throw a party without the need for a DJ. It really is no surprise that DJ Hero 2 won the staff’s pick for best music game.
