Final Fantasy Agito XIII Gets a Date and a New Name

Late at the end of last year, Square Enix filed a trademark for a new property called Final Fantasy Type 0. No one knew what it meant. Turns out they were just saving that information for a few weeks later.

The Final Fantasy news just won’t stop churning today after Square Enix’s meeting. Little had been known about Versus XIII and even less about Agito XIII, both part of the Fabula Nova Crystallis Final Fantasy universe, and while Versus XIII got a trailer, the PlayStation Portable game got a whole lot more. The new name for the game is now Final Fantasy Type 0. Director Hajime Tabata said that the name change was appropriate considering how much the title was moving into a more action-oriented design, as opposed to the game’s original intention of being more similar to Final Fantasy XIII.

As you can see, probably the most exciting news about this game is that we now have a (tentative) date. Summer 2011 is the goal for Japan right now, so the rest of world will probably get it six to nine months later. Even more interesting is that the game will be shipping on two UMDs – a PSP first. No one knows what that will mean for PSPgo owners considering Square Enix’s current….”love”…of the device.

As summer, and inevitably E3, gets closer, be sure to stay tuned to PlayStation LifeStyle for more info on Final Fantasy Type 0.
