Vanquish’s Boosters Run Out of Fuel

Platinum Games gained a boost in popularity after the release of Bayonetta last year. Just 9 short months later, they released Vanquish. Could lightning strike twice in the same year?

Well, maybe not lightning but it is a spark. Last February, Bayonetta sales passed the 1 million mark just one month after release. After two months on the market, Vanquish sales are just under the 1 million mark at 820,000 sales. This figure comes from financial reports released by Sega’s parent company, Sega Sammy. The reports only cover up until December 31st, so we don’t know how much the game sold in January. Sega had this so say about sales:

In the home video game software industry, the demand was generally weak in the US and European markets due to the headwind like sluggish personal consumption. The Group needs to adapt to changing business environment in which the market demand for new content geared to social networking service (SNS), smartphone is expanding.

Luckily, Sega has already announced that they plan to publish another game by Platinum Games. It might surprise you to know that Sega Sammy’s biggest source of income was from Japanese pachinko machines. One can only hope this doesn’t mean Platinum games will be incorporating pachinko into their games.
