Here in Japan, once in a while I enjoy kickin’ it at a net cafe. These places are dope. In addition to the expected compuboxes with intertrons and games, they’ve got billiards, darts, massage chairs, a big ol’ magazine rack, party rooms (if that sounds silly, keep in mind, this is Japan, where most peoples’ houses and apartments are way too small to host a party), karaoke and more. Some areas happen to include a TV with a gaming console. Even now, in 2011, that console is almost always the PlayStation 2. I say “almost” giving somewhere the benefit of the doubt; I have personally never seen anything other than a PS2 in those cubicles. In addition to the available consoles, there’s a big wall of software to be freely borrowed.
With that said, we move to recent hardware sales news. Japanese electronics sales ranking group Media Create has said that last week, the mighty PlayStation 2 managed to outsell the Xbox 360, despite being a full generation older. The gap wasn’t all that big though, as it stood PS2: 1,638 and Xbox 360: 1,619. The complete list went:
Nintendo 3DS – 61,394
PlayStation 3 – 26,623
PlayStation Portable – 22,911
Wii – 9,724
DSi LL – 7,452
DSi – 6,513
PlayStation 2 – 1,638
Xbox 360 – 1,619
DS Lite – 625
PSPgo – 600
The top-10 Software sales look like this, with the first number being the amount of copies sold last week, and the second being the total sold since the game’s release.
01. Dynasty Warriors 6 (PS3) – 67,475 last week, (320,565 total sold)
02. Dissidia 012 Duodecim Final Fantasy (PSP) – 31,508 / 382,171 total
