Bring Down the House with Armageddon Demo

Red Faction: Armageddon is bringing us more of the franchise’s characteristic ultra destructive combat, and a demo for the game will hopefully blow skepticism out the window.

Red Faction: Guerrilla released almost two years ago and received mostly positive reviews for it’s groundbreaking level of destructibility, which changed the dynamic of combat by providing players with numerous creative ways to approach a situation. Unfortunately, the game also suffered from monotonous looking environments and a lackluster plot line, which are elements that will hopefully be fixed in the sequel, Red Faction: Armageddon. Taking place 50 years after the events of Guerrilla, Armageddon places you in control of Darius Mason, who accidentally awakens an ancient and violent martian race. Thus Darius ends up joining the Red Faction in an effort to save the colonists who hate him from a threat that could destroy everyone on Mars.

Next week the demo for the game will hopefully release, since it’s been announced to hit the PlayStation Network on May 3rd. Unfortunately, the network is still down at the moment, but Sony has announced they should have a clear path to getting it back online next week, which could be just in time for the release window.

Hopefully this is the case, because playing with the weapons and destructive environments have always been a Red Faction highlight, and the demo will give players a chance to try out the Nano Forge and the new Magnet Gun. Each brings what looks like fun and creative ways to manipulate structures in advantageous ways. The Magnet Gun allows players to fire two magnets on any surface, which upon both being deployed are immediately and forcefully attracted to each other, bringing whatever surface they’re attached to with them, be it enemies, vehicles, buildings, or anything else you can see. The Nano Forge on the other hand allows you to rebuild anything you’ve destroyed, which should be handy after an intense battle, or even during one to seal off walls and cut off an enemy’s path.

Red Faction: Armageddon is slated for release on May 31st in the US and Europe, June 2nd in Australia, and June 3rd in the UK. If you’re not sure yet why Armageddon looks like a total blast, check out the most recent trailer of the game. If you’re already a fan and you’re ready to tear through buildings like Godzilla with a plasma cannon, then you might want to check out the pre-order bonuses available, which include some pretty sweet weapons or a strategy guide. Otherwise, chalk this up as one more reason to hope the PSN comes back soon.
