Earlier in the week, the next DLC character for Mortal Kombat was revealed: Freddy Krueger. The decision to add Freddy to MK9 has been a shocker for many, despite NetherRealm Studios stating beforehand that it would be such. Plenty of fans haven’t been too happy, but who else could they have added to please everyone? Sure, there are tons of other characters that have appeared in the series, many of which have faded into obscurity, but NetherRealm Studios don’t appear to have considered that option, and if it weren’t Freddy, it would’ve been another frightening murderer that we’ve seen on the big screen.
When asked about the decision making process behind the newly announced character for MK9, Ed Boon, the mastermind behind the violent fighting game series, shared some of his logic. Boon stated:
When we had the discussions about the DLC characters, we knew that we wanted to add a returning character, a new character, but also a guest character. That was one of the goals right from the beginning. A number of names were run by us: Jason, Michael Myers and all those guys. Freddy Kreuger, we felt, was the most instantly recognizable and he fits in with Mortal Kombat with his claws. It just seemed like the best fit.
Skarlet took up the returning character spot, while Rain was a new playable character for the series. That leaves one item: a guest character. When it really comes down to it, Kratos was an outstanding fit, but they needed something that could be on both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. What better than to add an insane murderer that has brought nightmares to teenagers across the nation?
Okay, so Freddy Krueger might not be a fan favorite, especially since Baraka has kind of been the “claw guy” since Mortal Kombat II. I personally prefer Michael Myers, but he doesn’t do much in the movies except for move slowly and stab people, so it’s hard to imagine him having a library of moves.
