Uncharted 3 is a Grand Adventure Encompassing 15-Years of Naughty Dog Experience

Uncharted is widely considered to be one of the greatest IPs of this generation, and for good reason; its developer, Naughty Dog, has roots dating all the way back to the original PlayStation with Crash Bandicoot, and have continually delivered what many consider to be the greatest adventures in gaming history. So now that 15 years have passed since their first highly acclaimed title, it’s only natural that they’ve applied everything learned into one grand project: Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.

During an interview with The Gaming Liberty, Richard Lemarchand, Lead Game Designer at Naughty Dog, shared his enthusiasm for Uncharted 3‘s quality, and how much experience has been utilized during the project. He stated:

It’s the pinnacle of what we’ve reached. You can trace the building blocks of Uncharted all the way back to the Crash Bandicoot series on the PSX.

So what’s new in Drake’s upcoming adventure? Richard replied:

Drake has some new abilities like backwards climbing. We have a hugely expanded role for brawling and bare knuckle fighting for this game. There’s also all kinds of technological innovations for example with the sand systems and the dynamic ocean I mentioned. There’s also some cool new stuff to do with lighting and volumetric lighting like you can see in the demos.

In the same way that Uncharted 2 expanded on the original Uncharted, Uncharted 3 is looking to better its predecessor in all categories: gameplay, variety, graphics, and more. The sand systems and dynamic ocean mentioned above haven’t been emphasized enough, as they lay the technical foundation for what will probably be one of the biggest set-pieces in any game to-date. That, along with even more fluid gameplay and more options, will make this undoubtedly the pinnacle of the Uncharted series, and perhaps the most refined game in Naughty Dog’s extensive repertoire.
