Rockstar Assures Gamers that the Studio’s Priority is “Doing New Things”

We’ve seen Rockstar elevate the gaming medium to new heights with revolutionary titles like Grand Theft Auto III and the recently released Red Dead Redemption. But with new Max Payne and Grand Theft Auto installments on the horizon, it’s easy to see how some may fear that Rockstar plans to play it safe with well established franchises that are set it open-worlds that Rockstar has created time and time again.

Fortunately, the developer plans to shake things up in the future by “doing new things.” Speaking with Japanese mag Dengeki, creative boss Dan Houser makes it clear that gamers can expect a fair amount of innovation from Rockstar in the future.

I think the future for us is to continue doing new things. Our games up to now have been different from any genre that existed at the time; we made new genres by ourselves with games like the GTA series. We didn’t rely on testimonials in a business textbook to do what we’ve done.

All we’ve done is keep on working with the same teams and the same really talented people — not just one or two people, but everyone in Rockstar contributed, which I think is really important.

Continuing:

Sam [Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games] likes to say that consumers see video games have to be fun if we expect consumers to lay out $50 or so for them, but the focus of my effort has been to make good games first and let the results come naturally after that.

If we make the sort of games we want to play, then we believe people are going to buy them.

Expect big things from Rockstar in 2012. With Max Payne 3 set to launch early next year and GTA V likely to arrive late next year, there’s a lot to look forward to in the coming months.
