Battlefield 3
Publisher: Electronic Arts
Developer: DICE
Battlefield 3 was exactly what people were expecting it to be leading up to release – a deeply satisfying war game. As with its predecessors, it showed the competition what war simulation really means with its cast of vehicles, large maps, and heart-pumping audio. Not only was it a blast to hop online, compete, and unlock rewards, but the thrill of blowing away groups of enemy combatants with a T-90 tank equipped with a massive cannon while seeing and hearing other players dogfighting in the air, and battling on the ground for territory can’t be overstated. Battlefield 3 was a game that made you feel like a soldier, and rewarded you for doing so. It didn’t break the mold of its successful franchise, but it did substantiate itself from the many first-person shooters we saw this year, and is our choice for Best Shooter of 2011.
