In the United States, AT&T will be the exclusive service provider for the 3G version of Sony’s PlayStation Vita. Pricing plans for those who intend to take their Vitas online via AT&T’s network have apparently surfaced, if shop employees are correct.
The American pricing model works on how much data is transferred. According to an intrepid gamer in yon AT&T store, prices will be the same as they are on AT&T’s other 3G devices, meaning one can pay $15 a month for 250 MB of data or $25 a month for 2 GB of data.
The Japanese pricing works differently, with interested gamers having to buy prepaid data cards from provider DoCoMo for 1,000 yen (about $13), which is good for 20 hours of 3G usage. After 30 days, any unused time expires, and periodically, the player must pay for a new physical card rather than recharge the old one, which costs 2,100 yen (around $27). These can only be purchased online, which is highly unusual in Japan. Upon my asking these questions to the DoCoMo representatives, they tried to sell me an unlimited data plan for around $55 a month, which led to awkward assurance that I was only there to ask questions.
