Final Fantasy X‘s HD remaster wasn’t the only hot topic brought up at Square Enix’s Taipei launch party for Final Fantasy XIII-2. Many gamers have been confused and even put off by Final Fantasy XIII-2‘s inconclusive ending, exacerbated by a “To Be Continued” flashing across the screen. This has led to rampant speculation and debate about a possible Final Fantasy XIII-3. Director Motomu Toriyama was able to address this issue in person, though he didn’t completely solve the mystery.
Asked straight up what this was all about, Toriyama pointed towards Square Enix’s plans to keep feeding players a steady diet of downloadable content, so in that way, the game sort of “continues.” He said another part of the meaning was that there are multiple endings that can be found, and hardly any players will have found them all by the time they clear the canonical storyline. He encourages players to get back in there and keep looking. Key among the upcoming DLC updates to the game will be a “Lightning Episode.” The universe of XIII-2 has previously been announced to receive a manga series as well.
Keeping his cards close to his chest, however, he put those ideas out there while in no way taking the idea of XIII-3 off the table. Some fans are clamoring for another sequel, while others are wanting the company to finish up Final Fantasy Versus XIII first. Whatever Square Enix decides to do with the franchise, we’ll keep you posted.
