Sony’s Handheld Flies Off Shelves, Vita Worldwide Sales Reach 1.2 Million

Sony has just announced that their shiny new handheld is doing quite well, as sales for the PlayStation Vita have now hit 1.2 million worldwide.

While the Vita got off to a slow start in Japan, the device has clearly resonated with western audiences, especially considering the fact that it launched only fully last week. The question that remains however is whether or not Sony will be able to maintain this level of momentum for the device as we push through 2012 and beyond. Software sales (both retail and digital) have also passed 2 million.

According to SCEI president Andy House, they’re going to do everything they can to keep the ball rolling.

PS Vita was designed to deliver the ultimate portable entertainment experience, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the reaction we’re seeing from consumers and the pace at which PS Vita is selling .

The market has responded and there is clear demand for a mobile device capable of providing a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real world context.

To sustain momentum, we’re working closely with 3rd party developers and publishers to ensure the best games and franchises possible will be available on PS Vita, and our software line up for the remainder of 2012 will have something for everyone across the globe.
