According to Sega’s Sonic Team, there are no plans for any subsequent episodes in the Sonic 4 series following the release of Episode 2.
The boss of developer Sonic Team Takashi Iizuka confirmed this news to Digital Spy at a Sega Event in London. Iizuka told the media outlet that the team is…
… looking forward to hearing the feedback from the users for Episode 2, but we are currently not planning to release another episode.
We just want to see how the users accept this episode.
It’s clear that the Sonic franchise is no longer the popular side-scroller it once was. Sonic 4 must not be selling well enough for the team to justify building upon the title with future episodes. In an evolving industry where the platforming genre is rapidly losing popularity, it’s becoming increasing difficult for franchises other than Mario to stay relevant.
If you find this news upsetting, make sure you support the upcoming Episode 2 when it launches later this year on the PlayStation Network.
