Sony has stressed that small titles and indie games, in addition to AAA titles, will help the PlayStation Vita grow and turn into an eventual success.
The company’s worldwide studios head, Shuhei Yoshida, stated in an interview with Gamasutra that smaller titles alongside quality AAA games – such as Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation and Call of Duty Black Ops Declassified – is key to the Vita’s success:
The whole development process of Vita was us watching the smartphone and the tablet market grow and blossom. We’ve seen lots of small games sold digitally through the app stores of each device, and that’s something we thought is a great addition to the whole offering of video games to the consumers.
We do not necessarily see the smartphone replacing the portable console market. It’s true that many casual people already own smartphones, and spending a dollar for a game is a very easy thing to do. People who really like games want more immersive, deeper games. In addition, they also enjoy short-form, small games.
Sony were heavily expected to focus a considerable segment of their E3 press conference on Monday on the Vita – especially due to the handheld’s lackluster sales. That said, they did admit that it was their fault in not having an emphasis on the platform during the presser.
