Persona 4: The Golden Jumpstarts Vita Sales in Japan

Finally, sales of the PlayStation Vita are on the upswing in Japan, thanks to the release of Atlus’ RPG Persona 4: The Golden.

Sony’s handheld managed to sell 34,459 units this past week, a noticeable increase from last week’s meager 13,383. There’s no doubt that this surge in sales is primarily due to the launch of Persona 4, which sold a whopping 137,076 units during its release week.

Despite the surge in sales, the Vita still trailed the 3DS by a substantial margin, coming in second place for the week just behind Nintendo’s device. Check out the full chart below:

  1. 3DS: 61,793 (Last week: 64,875)
  2. Vita: 34,459 (13,383)
  3. PlayStation 3: 14,673 (15,593)
  4. PSP: 9740 (10,038)
  5. Wii: 5963 (6029)
  6. PlayStation 2: 1237 (1091)
  7. Xbox 360: 1084 (1001)
  8. DSi XL: 689 (615)
  9. DSi: 380 (383)

Nintendo’s 3DS is clearly a force to be reckoned with, so what will it take from Sony to win Japanese gamers over? A new Monster Hunter? A substantial price drop? Let us know what you think will do the trick in the comments below.
