Gearbox has revealed Gaige via the promo below, Borderlands 2‘s new Mechromancer class. Gaige is a cyborg who can control her guardian robot Deathtrap (pictured) via her robotic arm. The Mechromancer’s abilities are largely unknown at this point, but she’s supposed to be well suited for players who’re less skilled at first person shooters, in fact Borderlands 2 Lead Designer John Hemingway was infamously quoted by Eurogamer describing the Mechromancer as a girlfriend co-op character:
“The design team was looking at the concept art and thought, you know what, this is actually the cutest character we’ve ever had. I want to make, for the lack of a better term, the girlfriend skill tree. This is, I love Borderlands and I want to share it with someone, but they suck at first-person shooters. Can we make a skill tree that actually allows them to understand the game and to play the game? That’s what our attempt with the Best Friends Forever skill tree is.”
Unfortunately, while Borderlands 2 is hitting store shelves September 18th, Gaige wont be available until October 16th, priced at $9.99. Personally, $10 seems like probably a bit too much to swallow just for a single character (who’s apparently made exclusively for your girlfriend) but fortunately you can get your hands on the Mechromancer for free if you pre-order, or buy the Borderlands 2 season pass.
This is probably one of the most substantial pre-order bonuses I’ve seen in recent years, I imagine if Gaige was available day one that it’d cause quite a negative stir. Has this convinced you to pre-order Borderlands 2?
