Capcom: Even Though DmC is Locked at 30FPS, it Looks Like it Runs at 60

The Devil May Cry games are known to have fast, fluid combat, so the news that Ninja Theory’s upcoming reboot will only run at 30fps has proven to be a bit worrisome. However, according to Capcom, through some sort of development trickery, the studio has managed to make the game appear as though it runs at 60 frames-per-second.

Capcom’s Hideaki Itsuno told Eurogamer:

During the course of the development of Dragon’s Dogma, we did a lot of experimentation and happened upon some techniques for working with Unreal Engine, some fairly elaborate techniques, that allow for a controller responsiveness that gives the player the feel of 60 frames per second.

60 frames per second is a speed the brain and the eye can catch up with and understand. But at 30 frames per second there’s a technique where you take advantage of the brain’s ability to fill in the blanks.

In order to provide the player with a more detailed and visually impressive game, they had to compromise to 30fps. Will their development magic actually be able to provide an experience that feels like it’s running at 60fps? We’ll just have to wait until the game launches on January 15th to find out.
