Last year’s Battlefield 3 was an unquestioned visual juggernaut, which helped debut the powerful Frostbite 2 engine. Since then, Need for Speed: The Run, and Medal of Honor: Warfighter were both developed on EA’s Frostbite 2 engine, with several other Frostbite 2 featured games launching next year. Now we can add the next Mass Effect game to Frostbite’s hit/miss repertoire of titles.
In a blog post on the official BioWare blog, EA Montreal’s studio director, Yanick Roy, has announced that they will be developing the next Mass Effect with the Frostbite engine. We seemingly have nothing to worry about, as EA Montreal has had extensive experience working on the Mass Effect series:
The Montreal studio has made significant contributions to the Mass Effect franchise. We started by building about half the cinematics for ME2, then most of its N7 missions, and finally we played an important role in the development of much of its post-release content. Then on ME3, we took charge of the multiplayer portion as well as making significant contributions to the single-player campaign. Most recently, we built a large piece of DLC that will be released on November 27 and that you know under the name of Omega.
That evolution now takes its next step, with the news that the next Mass Effect game is already in development, driven by the team here in Montreal. This is the goal we have been working toward for years now, and every member of our team is proud, excited, and humbled to take on the responsibility for the next game.
BioWare will “continue to support” Montreal in their development. Yanuck Roy says that the studio’s new Mass Effect will be built with “Frostbite as its foundation.” This is an ambiguous quote, leaving open the very likely possibility that the new Mass Effect may be built on the next generation Frostbite 3 engine.
Are you excited about this news, or still a little wary for Mass Effect’s future?
