PSM3 recently interviewed two of the developers behind Platinum Game’s controversial adopted baby Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, where they spoke in depth about MGR:R along with the culture surrounding the Platinum and Kojima studios.
In the interview Platinum Games’ director Kenji Saito commented on how the company strayed from Kojima studio’s original more stealth based concept:
We butted heads a lot with Kojima Productions. Since the stealth aspect was pretty much detached from our game, we had to focus more on the timeline and feeling of the world.
The ditching of stealth wasn’t the only major change when developing Metal Gear Rising:
The boss battles and the bosses in general were completely different in the original concept. There were a lot of stealth concepts that they were doing internally at Kojima studios, so now that it’s solely an action game the design and the action sequences are completely different.
Of course, Metal Gear is a huge important franchise, and Revengeance isn’t being developed outside of Kojima Studio’s watchful eye:
All of our boss concepts and any kind of art concept that comes out of Platinum Games are supervised by our art director at Kojima studios, Yoji Shinkawa, and I think that reflects positively in the game.
The interview is really quite interesting, and can be read in its lengthy entirety on CVG.
What do you think of Metal Gear Rising Revengeance’s departure from Kojima Production’s original vision? Would you have preferred a stealth action title rather than Platinum’s high octane thrill-ride? Let us know in the comments.
