Best Shooter of 2012 Award

Winner: Far Cry 3

10 years from now, you might look back at 2012 and think to yourself “that was a great year for shooters.” While many games allowed you to shoot digital bystanders this year, only one could be crowned “Best Shooter.” In the end, we had to determine the king of all 2012 shooters by the sheer variety of things you could shoot. Far Cry 3 came out on top thanks to it’s massive open world, variety of vehicles, and all of the different kinds of pirates you could shoot. Do you want shoot pirates with bandanas? Do you want to shoot pirates with sunglasses? Do you want to shoot pirates driving around in cars?

In reality, Far Cry 3 excels as a shooter thanks to the absurd level of operator freedom within. If you want to hunt down some of those bastard sharks, all you have to do is set a waypoint and dive in. If you want to test your hunting abilities with a new sniper rifle, hop on your ATV and drive into the wilderness, my friend. In 2012, no other shooter offers as much choice to the player as Far Cry 3.

What’s more, Ubisoft’s jungle paradise is rife with different activities for anyone hoping to define insanity. In an instant, you might find yourself fighting off Komodo dragons, sneaking up on a bounty target, or injecting yourself with a serum that enhances your perception while hunting. Ubisoft’s shooter outpaces and outwits the stalwart Call of Duty entry this year by tightening the mechanics of firing a gun in a video game to light speed. If you’re looking for any virtual bloodletting, Far Cry 3 is your best bet in 2012.
