Mojang: “We’ll Consider Minecraft for PlayStation” Once Exclusivity Deal Expires

2012 saw the release of Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition on the Xbox 360, marking the first time the Minecraft franchise has appeared on a console. Since it came out, the 360 version has achieved over 5 million in sales, earning Mojang a ton of money in the process.

Since Minecraft is owned by Mojang, and not Microsoft, the next logical step for the game would be a port to other platforms, with the PlayStation 3 an obvious choice. Talking to iGamer, Jens Bergensten, Lead Developer of Minecraft and MinecraftPocket Edition, revealed that it is something they will consider:

Microsoft has an exclusivity deal for consoles. When it runs out we’ll consider Minecraft for PlayStation, but Wii U is very unlikely.

We don’t know exactly when the exclusivity deal ends, but an easy guess is a 1 year deal, which would end this May. Also, he doesn’t mention PS3 specifically, meaning that it may come to PS3, PS4 or PS Vita, though that is just speculation.

If anything does happen with Minecraft on a PlayStation system, we’ll be sure to let you know.
