Firmware update 4.40 went live for the PlayStation 3 last week, with no word from Sony on what it actually does. Well, they finally refreshed their update page in the UK, detailing the main features of the new system software:
- System software update 4.40 will allow users to download content purchased from our online store to their PS3. This feature is not available yet and will be activated in May 2013.
- The wireless stereo headset (CECHYA-0080 / CECHYA-0086) and the stereo headset (CECHYA-0088) now support PlayStation 2 Classics that have been downloaded from PlayStation Store.
- System software stability during use of some features has been improved.
As for North America, here’s the main features from that update:
- [Closed Captions] has been added as a feature under @ (Video Settings).
- The wireless stereo headset (CECHYA-0080 / CECHYA-0086) and the stereo headset (CECHYA-0088) now support PlayStation2 Classics that have been downloaded from PlayStation Store.
- System software stability during use of some features has been improved.
Even though it wasn’t listed in the North American notes, the new firmware most likely adds the same prep for the downloads from the online store, but we’ve reached out to Sony for clarification just in case.
Also, if you need to update your PS3 but it doesn’t have internet access, head over here for North America and scroll to the bottom of this page in the UK to get it.
