Cerny: PS4 Launch Lineup “is Going to be Stronger Than any Prior PlayStation Hardware”, Porting PC Engines to PS4 Takes “Weeks, not Months”

With E3 still a little while away, the exact details of the PS4’s launch are a complete mystery – games like Primal Carnage, inFamous: Second Son and Killzone: Shadow Fall are probably going to be there, but past that, who knows?

Speaking to Gamasutra, the PS4’s lead system architect and Knack developer Mark Cerny revealed:

The launch lineup for PlayStation 4 — though I unfortunately can’t give the title count — is going to be stronger than any prior PlayStation hardware. And that’s a result of that familiarity [of hardware design].

He added that it only takes “weeks, not months” to port a game engine from the PC to the PlayStation 4, but, further down the road, dedicated console developers will be able to make the most out the PS4.

There are many, many ways to control how the resources within the GPU are allocated between graphics and compute. Of course, what you can do, and what most launch titles will do, is allocate all of the resources to graphics. And that’s perfectly fine, that’s great. It’s just that the vision is that by the middle of the console lifecycle, that there’s a bit more going on with compute.

Having the strongest launch lineup of any PlayStation system will require a huge amount of games – for example, here’s the Vita’s massive line-up, which they said was the biggest launch ever too. As we don’t know about that many PS4 games, here’s hoping E3 blows us all away this June 11-13th. Until then, be sure to stick to PSLS for all the latest PS4 news.
