In an effort to combat used games sales, the Online Pass was created to encourage consumers to buy games new, otherwise you’d be forced to pay the publisher a fee (usually $10) to take advantage of the online play or whatever else was locked without a code. One of the biggest supporters of this initiative was EA, who as of today are doing away with that pesky pass.
Speaking to VentureBeat, John Reseburg, EA’s Senior Director of Corporate Communications, said that, “yes, we’re discontinuing Online Pass. None of our new EA titles will include that feature.” The reason for this turnaround was because “many players didn’t respond to the format” and EA “listened to the feedback and decided to do away with it moving forward.”
Basically, this news means that you won’t need to activate your Online Pass to make the most out of upcoming EA titles like Madden 25, FIFA 14, Battlefield 4, and more.
