PS4 Replacement Hard Drive Restrictions Revealed; System Won’t Allow for an External HDD to Expand Storage

As we’re just over two weeks away from the PlayStation 4 launch on November 15th in the United States and Canada, Sony has decided to release a Mega PS4 FAQ. Since it can be rather daunting and contains so much information, we’ll be breaking the important information we’ve yet to cover fully into separate posts, hopefully making finding what you need a little easier.

Looking at the 5400 RPM SATA II hard drive included with every PS4, you will be able to replace it with a new hard drive, so long as it complies with these standards:

  • Is no thicker than 9.5mm
  • Is larger than 160GB

Unfortunately, you won’t be able to connect an external hard drive to the PlayStation 4 to expand the storage, as the feature is not supported on PS4.

Are you planning on replacing the PS4 HDD? Let us know in the comments below.
