October 2013 NPD: Grand Theft Auto V #1 With 1.1 Million Sold, Batman: Arkham Origins Beats Assassin’s Creed IV

Marking the third straight month of industry sales going up, October 2013 (reported from October 6th – November 2nd) retail sales in the US were $791.1 million, up 5% compared to this time last year.

Software (including PC) was up 10% to $495.1 million, with Grand Theft Auto V moving 1.1 million copies and finishing first.

Liam Callahan of the NPD talked about software:

Growth in video game software sales over the last few months has reversed negative year-to-date trends caused by declines seen earlier in the year with video game software sales currently flat to last year. With the launch of the PS4 and Xbox One, we hope to see positive trends over November and December which would lead to an increase in software sales for the year.

Things weren’t as cheery for hardware, with it down 8% to $171.7 million. While some analysts predicted the PS3 would come out on top, Major Nelson confirmed that the Xbox 360 was the #1 selling console in October, moving 166,000 units.

Here’s the top 10 selling games in October 2013, which includes Collectors Edition, GOTY Edition, and bundles, but not those bundled with hardware:

  1. Grand Theft Auto V (1.1 million)
  2. Pokemon X (combined, Pokemon X and Y sold 1.7 million)
  3. Pokemon Y
