Best Shooter of 2013 Award

Winner: BioShock Infinite

Shooters have been a mainstay of video game culture since the early days of gaming. Every year, tons of shooters release and, for the most part, there are the expected military war ‘simulators’ and futuristic space battles with their fancy gadgets and high tech weaponry, but BioShock Infinite took us in a different direction.

Like the floating city of Columbia that it is set in, BioShock Infinite flies high above the heads of this year’s repeated military shooter iterations. BioShock Infinite retains the series’ unique pairing of guns and special powers, called Vigors. Nearly every setpiece and battle within BioShock Infinite serves a purpose and progresses the narrative to an awesomely stunning conclusion, which is something BioShock Infinite did so well over the other contenders this year.

The driving narrative, the fast and fun gunplay, and the great characters and environments set BioShock Infinite apart from the others that may have taken this title. Rather than go for more of the same and blend into the crowd, BioShock Infinite did what it took to stand above the rest and get noticed as the best shooter of 2013.

Runners Up:

  • Battlefield 4… if they fix it.
  • Call of Duty: Ghosts… if only the dog hadn’t been a gimmick.
