We’ll be given more information about The Last of Us’ Left Behind DLC later this week, but it’s been confirmed that the new single player story will star Ellie and her best friend Riley as they attend a military boarding school in the Boston quarantine zone. All of us this takes place before Ellie meets Joel and embarks on the journey in The Last of Us’ campaign.
To get a little more info about Left Behind, the PS Blog spoke with Ashley Johnson (Ellie), where she revealed that Creative Director Neil Druckmann told her about the DLC’s story “shortly after the release of The Last of Us.” Johnson then discussed how Left Behind feels different to The Last of Us:
It’s definitely different. It’s a little bit more “fun,” because you have two teenage girls going through a mall. It’s kind of like a post-pandemic version of two teenage girls hanging out. Definitely not a normal hangout! It’s very different — a little more playful.
There’s a bit of everything in there. You’re really getting a new sense of the environment. You’ll engage in combat that seems familiar from the original campaign, but there are some new touches and nuances, too.
Finishing up, Ashley was asked how The Last of Us has changed her life and career:
To this point in my life, The Last of Us is 100% my favorite thing I’ve ever worked on. You’d think working on something for two years would not be a fun thing to do, but I’ve been so blown away by the response. When we were working on it, I think we all knew we were working on something special. I just feel so fortunate that I got to be a part of it — even more so because of the response to Ellie and to what a strong female character she is.
If you missed it back in November, here’s the Left Behind reveal video:
The Last of Us: Left Behind will be given free to anyone who has the $19.99 The Last of Us Season Pass, or $14.99 separately. There’s currently no confirmed release date, just early 2014 right now, but we should be hearing about one soon.
