Before the PlayStation 4 launches in Japan this Saturday (and the Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn PS4 beta starts), Sony has given an updated sales figure for their new console, revealing how it’s sold through (to consumers) over 5.3 million units worldwide as of February 8th, 2014. This is a jump of over 1 million units from their previous number of 4.2 million reported last month, and follows a very strong month of January in the US.

Sony President Andrew House had this to say about the updated sales figure:

I am thrilled that so many customers around the globe have continued to select PS4 as the best place to play throughout and beyond the holiday season. We are delighted that according to the NPD Group’s latest data, PS4 was January’s top-selling console in the United States. The PS4 system’s momentum just keeps growing stronger, and we are extremely grateful for the continued passion and support of PlayStation fans. February 22nd sees the launch of PS4 in Japan, and I’m looking forward to Japanese fans sharing the excitement of the deep social capabilities and entertainment experiences only possible on PS4.

When do you think the PS4 will cross 6 million? By the end of the month? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
