Yoshinori Kitase on a Possible Final Fantasy VII Remake: “It Would Take a Lot to Happen”

Prior to this month, the last substantial update we were given on the mythical Final Fantasy VII remake was back in July, where Final Fantasy Producer Yoshinori Kitase said “there is no plan” for a remake and they’d “have to investigate to be sure what our fans are looking for.”

In an interview between Eurogamer and Kitase last week about a potential remake, the Final Fantasy producer revealed, “I can honestly tell you I would love to do that. If you simply ask me if I personally would like to do that, yes I would. Definitely. There’s no lie about it. But you must believe me when I say it would take a lot to happen.”

Citing “staff availability and budget” as two reasons why we haven’t seen a Final Fantasy VII remake yet, Kitase also brought up the fact that it would be a huge project to conquer:

Even if I casually say I would like to do that, because it would be a huge project I would have to motivate myself to the level that I really am prepared to take on this huge responsibility. I don’t know if those three things [staff, budget, motivation] will happen simultaneously. It has to tick lots of very big boxes. I won’t rule out the possibility, but it would take a lot to make it happen.

But should I ever take it on, it would have to be the biggest project I’ve done. My life work. So I would have to be as highly motivated as that to end up with something I’m very happy with. It’s a huge thing for me.

Getting motivated for the Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster, however, wasn’t difficult because “my son only knows Tidus and Yuna through the Dissidia experience, not from the original titles. Obviously I wanted him to play one of my creations, so I had to make it available for PS3 and Vita users. That’s the reason.”

Do you think there will ever be a day where we see Final Fantasy VII remade by Square Enix? Let us know in the comments below.
