If you were still holding out hope that Batman: Arkham Knight would be released for the PS3 and Xbox 360, in addition to the PS4, Xbox One, and PC, you’re out of luck.
Speaking in the April 2014 issue of Game Informer (via Videogamer), Arkham Knight Game Director Sefton Hill confirmed that Rocksteady’s final Batman game would only be appearing on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Furthermore, Hill revealed that they came to this decision for Arkham Knight to be “next-gen” only fairly early on in the design process:
It’s not a challenge to move to next-gen. The real challenge is making sure you’re getting the best out of the machines. It’s easy to get the game running, but it’s about, ‘What can we do that really pushes those machines?’ Obviously you see a lot of games that are cross-gen, and they feel a bit reined in because of that. Because we were able to make that decision quite early, we were able to be more ambitious with the design and make a real, genuine next-gen game.
For an idea of just how genuine of a next-gen game Arkham Knight will be, the Game Informer issue reveals that a single character found within a cinematic has a polygon count similar to Arkham City’s entire environment. As well, the Batmobile has “hundreds of thousand of polygons” and takes up 160MB of memory.
