With the PS4 doing quite well when it debuted in Japan on February 22nd, Sony has revealed that the PS4 has sold over 6 million units worldwide to consumers as of March 1st (March 2nd in Japan). As pointed out by Sony, this 6 million milestone was achieved in under 4 months since the console launched back in November.
Although they may not have given a full breakdown of PS4 sales by region, Sony did say that there had been 370,000 PS4s sold to consumers in Japan between February 22nd and March 2nd, 2014.
Moving from hardware to software, there has been over 13.7 million copies of games sold worldwide through retail stores and the PlayStation Store as of March 2nd. Perhaps the weirdest thing about software sales is that the updated number for Killzone: Shadow Fall is at 2.1 million sold worldwide – the same number it was at as of January 15th. Other than Killzone, Knack, Call of Duty: Ghosts, FIFA 14, Battlefield 4, and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag are highlighted as “a few of the top selling titles.”
There were also some other stats thrown around, which we’ve listed below:
- Over half of PS4 owners have PlayStation Plus.
- The PlayStation App has been installed over 3.6 million times as of March 2nd.
- More than 100 million shares have been captured via the DualShock 4’s Share button.
- Over 3.6 million gameplay broadcasts have been streamed from the PS4 to either Twitch or Ustream.
- There have been over 56 million spectate sessions.
SCE President Andrew House had this to say about the 6 million PS4s sold:
I am absolutely delighted that PS4 is off to such a great start in Japan. The responses we have received for the PS4 system’s integrated social capabilities have been phenomenal, and I couldn’t be more thrilled that gamers are utilizing these unique features to engage, share, play and connect with users around the world. SCE will continue to expand the world of PlayStation by growing its library of breakthrough games and bringing more innovative features and services only possible on PS4.
