The Need for Speed Movie had a “Disappointing Start on the Domestic Side”

Despite some poor reviews and a third place opening behind Mr. Peabody & Sherman and 300: Rise of an Empire where it earned $17.8 million, the Need for Speed movie has almost made back all of its $66 million development cost already. This is thanks to the fact that the Need for Speed movie opened to $45.6 million from 40 territories overseas, including $21.2 million in China, with a worldwide total now sitting at $63.4 million.

Dave Hollis, Distribution Chief for Disney, had this to say about the opening of the Need for Speed movie (via THR):

It’s a disappointing start on the domestic side, but to open to that number worldwide and nearly match the budget of the film is great. This was a very affordable movie and with many territories left to open, everyone will be just fine. We feel great about where we are.
