The Catch-Up: March 19th & 20th, 2014 – Epic Isn’t Working on a new Unreal Tournament

Due to me running out of time and having some computer issues (it knows I bought a new computer to replace it), there was no Catch-Up yesterday. This means you get a super-sized Catch-Up today!

General News

  • Lionel Raynaud, Ubisoft Vice President of Creative, said at GDC that “VR would need to sell at least 1 million units to be viable for development.” So, don’t expect Ubisoft to be putting out any VR-supported games anytime soon. [Source]
  • As much as you may want them to, Epic Games is not planning on “shipping an Unreal Tournament game. We have a lot of nostalgia for the game, but we’re actually not developing anything in the Unreal game universe at all at the moment.” [Via, Source]
  • Minority Media (Papo & Yo) have confirmed that their next game is called Cali and it will be a tragic love story about falling in love with an AI avatar. There isn’t much known about the game past the name and brief description, though we do know it’s coming to new-gen consoles. [Source]
  • According to Fred Dutton of the EU PS Blog, we’ll be learning about the April 2014 PlayStation Plus free games next week. There’s a good chance we’ll get all the details on Thursday, March 27th, with Mercenary Kings likely to be the PS4 free game. [Source]
  • According to a new report, Mojang made $326 million (£196 million) last year, with 90% of that coming from Minecraft, and $128 million being profit. A separate company established by co-founder Markus “Notch” Persson received $130 million in licensing fees from Mojang. [Via 1, 2, Source]

  • On May 6th, Aksys Games will release Hakuoki: Stories of the Shinsengumi for the PlayStation 3. Amazon currently has the Limited Edition for the cheapest at $49.99. [Press Release]
  • Class of Heroes 2G for PS3 is nearly complete, and MonkeyPaw Games wants to know if you’d be interested in a physical version at $39.99 + $4 shipping. If they pre-sell 7,000 copies, it will happen. Either way, there will also be a digital version of the game for $34.99 this Spring. [Vote Now!]
  • When the Killzone: Shadow Fall expansion pack releases next month, it will also bring Online Collectibles to online matches. This means, when playing in a Warzone, you may see some crates randomly appear. If you do, shoot the crate to collect it. You’ll receive points and a chance to unlock new Player Card Icons by doing so. [Source]
  • With Tom Hardy set to star, Doug Liman (Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Bourne Identity) is in final negotiations to direct the Splinter Cell movie, with shooting expected to begin in August for a 2015 release. [Source]
  • Sony’s first TV show made for PlayStation is called Powers, an hourlong drama based on the graphic novel by Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming. The initial order looks to be for 10 episodes. [Via, Source]
