Rumor: Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel Coming to PS3, Developed by 2K Australia

GamePointsNow, who usually leaks the European PlayStation Plus free games ahead of time, has a new leak for everyone – the existence of a new Borderlands game coming to the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC from 2K Australia, possibly releasing in 2014.

The site reports that it will be called Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, and takes place in between the events of Borderlands 1 and Borderlands 2. Sticking with the usual Borderlands formula in terms of gameplay, The Pre-Sequel is said to take place on the moon of Elpis and Hyperion’s moon base, with Handsome Jack hunting an alien artifact.

These are the rumored playable characters, all of whom are Handsome Jack’s lieutenants:

  • Athena the Gladiator – Melee-focused with plasma sword, able to absorb incoming fire with kinetic shield
  • Wilhelm the Enforcer – Uses a shoulder-mounted cannon and drones
  • Nisha the Lawbringer
  • Fragtrap, a militarized Claptrap

There’s also supposed to be laser and cryo weapons, with Elpis featuring reduced gravity and oxygen playing a big part in the game.

When previously talking about the Borderlands franchise, Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford said, “We are not working on Borderlands 3. That is unqualified. We have more to do in the franchise, but no, there isn’t a Borderlands 3.” So, this Pre-Sequel would fit into the category of “more to do in the franchise” if real.

With Gearbox set to reveal a new title this Saturday at PAX East, it’s possible we may be hearing about this Borderlands title soon, but for now, consider this a rumor.

Gearbox has declined to comment about Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel.
