PlayStation 4 Sales Surpass 7 Million Units Worldwide

Today, Sony announced that as of April 6th, the PlayStation 4 has moved over 7 million units worldwide. This is a figure that shows just how fast gamers are adopting the new-generation of consoles, and the momentum that has been behind Sony’s new direction for a system that is not only easier to develop for, but embraces the indie scene.

As sales for the PS4 have been topping out the charts for the last few months, it is easy to see Sony as the early leader for this console cycle. Thankfully, the PlayStation brand has not only finally launched in its native homeland, Japan, it is now currently available in over 72 different territories throughout the world, something that I am sure has helped expand its install base. In a press release from Sony Computer Entertainment, Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. had this to say about the new figures:

The response from the global gaming community for PS4 has been overwhelming and we are truly humbled that gamers are selecting PS4 as their next generation console of choice. The PS4 journey has just begun, and although we are still facing difficulties keeping up with the strong demand worldwide, we remain steadfast in our commitment to meet the needs of our customers, and surpassing the wildest expectations of gamers by delivering new user experiences that inspire and engage. We look forward to unveiling many of these experiences to our fans in the coming months.

On top of the news regarding the hardware sales, SCE have also made a point to state that the PS4 has moved over 20.5 million pieces of software worldwide through both digital and retail markets, a number that shows just how fast the PlayStation brand has been expanding, when compared to the fact that they only moved 13.7 million pieces of software just over a month ago. As we are only just starting out the second quarter of the year, and with around 120 titles set to be available for the PS4’s library this year, and over 135 million streams being shared using the PS4’s Share function, we are sure to see these numbers keep growing at a substantial rate.

Given that the PS3 had moved less than 4 million units world wide at this point in its life-cycle, what do you think is in store for the PS4’s future? Have you picked up a PS4 yet? What are you waiting for? Stop reading and go buy one, then come back because we love you here at PSLS. Make sure to leave us comments below and join in the never-ending conversation on our forums.
