2K Announces Borderlands and Civilization Revolution Servers To Go Down

As already reported, GameSpy Technology’s online service will be shutting down their servers and leaving a number of games without any online functionality. Today, 2K reported which of their legacy titles will be needing to get a server migration and which titles will be left with only offline play. Among the titles listed, only 2 were for the PlayStation 3, Borderlands and Civilization: Revolution, both of which will end up having their servers turned off as of May 31st. Thankfully, even though the they will be taken offline, there is a chance we will see them come back in the future as 2K did have this to say:

Starting May 31, Borderlands® PS3 and Civilization® Revolution PS3 will also go offline as a result of GameSpy Technology’s online service termination. We are currently investigating the technical feasibility of transitioning those titles. Again, players will not experience interruptions to offline play for these titles.  We will provide updates as they become available.

Sadly, even though 2K will be looking into bringing back the PS3 versions of Borderlands and Civilization Revolution to their full online functionality, not all of the titles listed will be making it through this whole. As can be seen by 2K’s announcement below.

2K Games has announced that in wake of the discontinuation of the GameSpy online service, several legacy titles will be migrated over to Steamworks, which will cause a temporary interruption but will also ensure that these games can continue to be enjoyed. At stake of course in the ability to play these games online with other players. This migration will begin on May 31st. Here is the list of titles set for transition:

Borderlands® (PC)
Civilization® III
Civilization® III: Conquests
Civilization® III: Play the World
Civilization® IV
Civilization® IV: Beyond the Sword
Civilization® IV: Colonization
Civilization® IV: Warlords

At the same time as these popular titles will remain active for the foreseeable future, several other lesser games will not be supported after May 31st. Here is a list of games and platforms:

Close Combat First to Fight (PC / Mac)
Jetfighter (PC)
Jetfighter V: Homeland Protector (PC)

Rune (PC)
