As part of a corporate strategy meeting earlier this week (via Polygon), Sony President Kaz Hirai made some very welcome comments regarding the PlayStation 4, including how “it’s been a hugely successful launch, but the key to the long term success of the platform lies in how solidly we can continue to grow the installed base. In terms of game titles for PS4, as of April 13th, 47 titles had been launched, with a total of 20.5 million units being sold via retailers and over the network on the PlayStation Store.”
With 7 million units sold worldwide as of early April, Hirai adds, “From a profitability perspective, PS4 is also already contributing profit on a hardware unit basis, establishing a very different business framework from that of previous platform businesses.” In fact, Kaz thinks the PS4 could be more profitable than the PS2:
The PS2 platform was the biggest success until now in terms of profit, but I believe that PS4’s hardware, software, and services have the potential to combine and develop into a platform capable of generating even greater profit.
A few other pieces of interesting information show that an open beta for PlayStation Now will hit the US this summer, “approximately half” of all PS4 owners have a PlayStation Plus subscription, and there are over 52 million active users on the PSN and SEN.
Are you surprised that 3.5 million PS4 users aren’t subscribed to PlayStation Plus? Let us know in the comments below.
