Ask PSLS: What is Your Favorite PSP Game?

With news of the PlayStation Portable getting discontinued in Japan and Europe this year, after already having received the axe in North America, we thought it would be fun to look back and ask the PSLS staff: What is your favorite PSP game?

Anthony Severino (@Sev_Anthony)

Ugh, the PSP. God I hated that device, but tried so many times to give it a fair shake. The only game that ever really did it for me was the original Lumines. That’s it.

I plead the 5th… no really, I liked that game where the controls were terrible because you only had one analog stick… oh wait, that was every damn game for that terrible device. I think my PSP got around the same amount of game time as my Wii. (just an FYI, my Wii got played under 10 times).

Ah, UMDs. You guys remember those? They were pretty silly, but damn, the PSP was such a cool system. It’s been a reeeeaaaalllyyy long time since I have had one though, so off the top of my head? I remember I loved playing Daxter. That was a great game for its time. And of course I have to mention Crisis Core. Anything to dive back into the world of Final Fantasy VII is a win for me.

The first title that comes to my mind is Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles, as Symphony of the Night is one of the best games ever made, but that is still technically a PSOne game to me. So, the only real game that stands out is Jeanne D’Arc, which was one of the best tactical RPGs I’ve ever played. If you haven’t had a chance to try it out, I would recommend this one in a second.

A pair of Final Fantasy spinoffs, Type-0 and Crisis Core. I loved the combat systems, they had system-best visuals, and they claim two of my favorite endings in the entire Final Fantasy franchise.

Since I was only a PSP owner for a short time (or two) many years ago, my memory is a little foggy. After a brief refresher of surfing Game Rankings though, I remembered the two PSP God of War games – Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta. While Chains of Olympus was a little short, I thought Ghost of Sparta was amazing and it definitely gets my vote as my favorite PSP game (*cough* despite the fact that I only played the PS3 version *cough*).

I’d also like to give an honorable mention to Daxter.

I still own three different flavors of the PSP, including the one that didn’t fare so well (let’s just say it didn’t go very far in sales). Looking back at my large library of games, both digital and UMD, I’m going to have to pick the game I spent the most time with, and it’s not MLB 10: The Show.

There was a time before trophies and achievements where your only goal was to enjoy the game and aim for 100% completion, and Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier was the epitome of that time, in my opinion. Searching for all of the collectibles, while taking down bad guys and bosses, was an incredible amount of fun and I’m not even sure how much time I logged into that game, but it was worth every second of it.
