Sony: PlayStation 4 Targeting Gamers Who Bought a Wii Last-Gen, There’s an Opportunity for PlayStation 3 Remasters

CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, Andrew House, has said that there’s an opportunity for the company to target those gamers with the PlayStation 4 who bought Nintendo’s Wii in the previous generation. Calling it a “big opportunity,” House said that data gathered by Sony suggests that ex-Wii owners are already buying the PlayStation 4, and that is what’s resulting in good sales.

Whether it’s based on this is a really good all-round entertainment device for a family in addition to having great games, our consumer data suggests some of those people are already coming in now and that’s what’s contributing to the really great sales we’ve had.

In order to attract this new customer base, Sony wants to remaster PlayStation 3 games so that new owners have an opportunity to get their hands on some previous hit titles. Quoting the example of The Last of Us, House said that a significant number of PlayStation 4 owners had never played it in the past.

I hesitate to say this because I know committed gamers may roll their eyes about it, but there’s an opportunity with some of the remastering or re-imagining from PS3 franchises that will potentially find an audience that hasn’t played them in the previous generation because they skipped that generation.

House drew a comparison between the film industry and the video games industry, lauding Disney for being able to remake old classics. Any chance that we’ll see some classic characters again then, Andrew?
