Uncharted Movie Begins Filming in Early 2015, Says Director

It’s been a long journey for the Uncharted movie, but if director Seth Gordon’s (Horrible Bosses, Identity Thief) comments to Zap2It are to be believed, filming will begin in early 2015:

I think very early next year. That’s the plan.

Even with “early 2015” months and months away, Gordon says, “That’s like tomorrow, essentially, because the prep is so complicated for the movie.” The reason that prep might be so complicated is because the movie will be “very international” and “all over the world.”

While the Uncharted movie may have a window to start filming, there still isn’t a star attached to play Nathan Drake, with the production team looking for someone of previously-attached lead Mark Wahlberg’s caliber:

I want it to be a great actor. That’s number one, and then if it’s someone who has an actual jaw, that’s even better. The game is so well done that you need it to live up to that. There’s no way we’d do the inverse of that where it’s somebody famous who can’t [act].

As for the script, Gordon shied away from giving out details, though he did talk about how it would honor the mythology from Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune:

It’s going to honor the mythology of the game, but I would say honor some of the most interesting stuff from the first one and build from there. There’s some stuff that isn’t in the game.

I love the complexity and frankly the sophistication of the storytelling in the game, and we aspire to that — but don’t want to tell the exact same story, of course — so something that doesn’t break the rules of what it did but expands. Because I feel like the people who play the games and know them well don’t want to just see the same story told. You want extra shades.

You may be skeptical about the Uncharted movie actually happening this time around, but Gordon thinks it will go forward because of its timing with Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and the fact they “just got the script to a really good place.”
